Can you fly with pets in cabin to Mexico?

Yes, you can, but only if both you and your pet meet the requirements of the Mexican airline you chose for your trip.

Flying to Mexico with your pet is easy! You will need the proper paperwork to enter the country, and it is possible that your pet may undergo an inspection upon arrival. All animals crossing the border into Mexico will need to meet the following requirements:

What are the airlines’ requirements for pet friendly flights?

First of all, you must be clear that not all mexican airlines have the same pet friendly policies. Knowing this, below we will show you what you will need to go flying with your pet within the Mexican territory without worries:

1. Vaccination record

Up-to-date rabies vaccine, indicating date of application, the period covered by vaccine, and product information (pets under 3 months of age are exempted from this requirement).

2. Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccine must be administered to the pet 28 days prior to its arrival to Mexico.

3. Certificate of Good Health

One original and one copy (valid for 5 days from date of issuance). The certificate must be extended by a veterinarian on letterhead paper printed with the veterinarian’s professional ID number and contain the following data:

    • Owner’s name and address.
    • Animal’s breed, sex, age, and color.
    • Departure and destination addresses.

4. Pet shall have been dewormed and deloused

No less than six months prior to their arrival into Mexico; product date of application and name shall be stated.

For pets that left Mexico and are reentering Mexico no more than 15 days later, the same certificate of good health shall be accepted that was provided on the pet’s exit with a still-valid rabies vaccine.

5. A kennel approved by the airline

Your pet must travel in a kennel, a suitable one for the size of your pet and that has enough space for it to be comfortable  inside it.

The maximum size allowed is 17 In. long by 11 In. wide and 7.5 In. height. (These measures will vary upon Mexican airline pet policies)

6. Pet’s weight

Your pet must be within the allowed weight range (Every airline has different weight policies, but the range may vary from 11 to 22 lb. which includes the weight of the kennel where your pet will be carried.

7. Pets before boarding

Your pet must remain in their carrier or container before boarding, when entering the aircraft, and throughout the flight. The container must be labeled as Pet In Cabin (PETC), which will be fitted at check-in counters.

8.  Other essential requirements

  • Pets over 8 weeks old are allowed.
  • Female pets with suckling pups and / or unweaned animals are not allowed.
  • Pets with veterinary treatment are not allowed.
  • The pet must travel in the same flight as its owner.

  • Only one pet per passenger is allowed.

  • No food or fluids can be given to the pet onboard the plane.

  • Pets shall not be placed on seats intended for clients for any reason whatsoever, even if those seats are empty

  • Pets are allowed in the cabin only if the flight lasts a maximum of 6 hours.

What kind of pets can fly in the cabin?

Most pet friendly airlines in Mexico only allow cats and dogs that meet their requirements and policies in the cabin, while others allow you to bring some types of birds on board.

Still, there are certain dogs and cats breeds that some airlines prefer not to admit avoiding possible losses.

We are talking about the brachiocephalic or short-nosed dog breeds, some are: English and French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Shar Pei. As for the cat breeds they are Burmese, Himalayan, Persian and Exotic shorthair.

The reason is that they are at risk of heatstroke and respiratory problems when exposed to stress or high temperatures.
